VG Nostalgia

I’ve been keeping pretty quiet about the new Sonic 4 game that SonicTeam is evidently excreting news about from time to time. Visually, yes, it’s stunning, frankly that’s what all the other CG Sonic games have been about. But I’m going to take my time. I just wanted to show you guys a little something. THIS, is the new Sonic 4 song for Splash Hill Act 1, the first stage in the game:

It’s not bad. I really have no qualms over it, but I’d like to hand over to you a little something made by the fans. Though I’m not particularly fond of the tune, it’s becoming increasingly evident that some fans know what they want, but aren’t getting:

Yes there are a lot of fans who are just too difficult to please, but I for one am a little more attracted to this fan-remix of the song you just heard. This generation seems to be among the “nostalgia” boom that was created recently, due to entirely new games surrounding the “classic” style of gaming. Like Mega Man 9 and 10, The Konami “rebirth” series, and etc. These games of course, are being a bit overshadowed by wide released store copies as the nostalgia craze is limited as downloadable content. Well, i don’t need to tell you that it’s because of today’s consoles are practically too powerful anymore for a “classic” genre. As comparing the two renditions above, I prefer the fan creation. But I think you saw that coming.

I’m actually a big fan of the Genesis ‘sound’ when it comes to chip-tune music. I think the best companies that took advantage of its capabilities were Treasure and Konami, as it clearly showed they had a knack for making some odd sounds in a cool way. The only thing I hear in that Sonic 4 clip is the noticeable “drum beat” being pushed into the background as a guy tap-dances on a midi keyboard… Man, am I REALLY that picky? Sorry, but when I hear a song, I have no opinion, but when I hear an ultimately BETTER version of that song made outside of the company, I tend to get irritated by the whole mess.

Sonic 4 has still a long way to come to interest me, I’ll just say it’s not winning any points for its “episodic” nature. More cash for your trash, Sega?

*Edit – On further note, I’ve actually captured myself humming the tune to myself occasionally. It just proves that the genesis sounding fan-remake is more energetic, more uplifting and more memorable then the sound of the original. but that goes without saying, what makes games nostalgic and memorable? It has to be how simple and lovable they are in their simplicity.

  1. Really liking that Genesis remix of the music. Why didn’t Sega go with something like that instead?

  2. Matty K says:

More than likely they’re trying to seize the new generation more than the old fans. Odd move since SEGA is trying to get Sonic back to his roots in this one

    Now that’s good game music.
    Ah…that brings me back.

  4. VirusHunter says:

Actually to tell you the truth the fan version sounds like something that the GBA Sonic games would have, after doing some listening it doesn’t sound like the Genesis could come up with that kind of sound. Although I still prefer it to Sega’s music.

LOVE the original and the fan remake C: !

  7. Gravecat says:

Definitely loving the fan remake a lot more than the original, but of course I’d put that down to personal bias, being a big fan of the old Genesis series. ;3

Still, I’d agree with what Matty K said — this, along with the video footage I’ve seen of Sonic 4 seems to imply that they’re trying to reboot the series with the modern gamer in mind, instead of going the whole hog as Mega Man 9/10 did and fully embracing the retro aspect. Which is a shame, but not entirely an unexpected move at all for Sega.

If you run both of them at the right time, they sing together and sound better than either one combined.
